NACC’s Innovations in Primary education cerebrates many victories after diversified interventions yield great results for girls like Hawa Usuman who is now at Lisumbwi Secondary School.

Born and raised in Mbalame village (one of the remotest village), Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi district, Hawa Usman comes from a humble family of four (2 boys and 2 Girls). She went to Namsato primary school (one of the schools supported by NACC IPE project)

As a poor girl, she used to walk for 5 Kilometers daily to and from school. She sometimes used to find no food at home after school. Her parents were just subsistence farmers but were keen to see their daughter exceling in education. They used to spend much of their time looking for piece work to generate income for their family that included school support for Usman. Usman could have given up on her future if it wasn’t for various life skills she obtained through NACC’s IPE’s interventions.

NACC extensively engaged Usman and fellow students in quiz sessions and awarding of best performers to promote competition and improve performance, and Targeted Outreach Communication(TOC) through Akandechere videos to provide life skills to students. These helped Hawa to perform very well in her Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations(PLSCE) and was selected to Lisumbwi Secondary School, one of the best schools in Mangochi District.

“Thanks so much NACC for comprehensively preparing me to persist in school and improve my performance. Your Akandechere (social mobilization sessions), mock examinations, quiz and awarding activities triggered my eargerness to remain in school and work extremely hard. My parents alone weren’t enough to shape my future” She appreciates

Usman’s transition to Secondary School brought mixed feelings for her parents as they had to shoulder the responsibility of school fees and other basic needs. The family struggled much to make ends meet such that they failed to pay school fees for her which resulted in her being chased away from attending classes at her new school.

The news of her return from school did not sit well with NACC recalling all the efforts which would just go down the drain. NACC intervened by engaging a Muslim organisation which opted for anonymity and supports Muslim students. The organization put Usman on their list of sponsorship for all her secondary school. You can imagine how happy Usman was together with us.

“I can see a brighter future after my secondary and tetially education many thanks to this organisation for school fees assistance which has buried  gullies of running tears on my cheeks  since I used to be sent back home from my secondary school and missed lessons for weeks” Said delighted Usman who dreams of becoming an Electric Engineer.

Usman’s mother Amina Daison plays a big role in ensuring smooth education journey for her daughter.

Daison says she envies her old school mates who are working and doing better in town and this helps her to draw a lesson for her chldren particularly Hawa.

She envisions her daughter becoming a role model in her family and the village as a whole as she is the first one to go to school up to secondary level in the area.

“I am relieved and so grateful…’ I’ll make sure my daughter persists and do better in school and I won’t provide space for anybody to frustrate my ambitions of making her someone who will carry a flag of my family and village….I want to see her coming home driving from her work in town before I die” She excitedly said.

“Thanks so much NACC for your pieces of advice that have assisted me to take a responsive caregiving to my girl child and also for your signposting to Daru Sunnah Foundation for school fees support which I’ve been struggling……’ concluded Hawa’s mother
