In a bid to promote tertiary education for vulnerable students, Needed Actions for Community Care and Development (NACC ) in collaboration with friends of Namwera carried out  a series of capacity building sessions targeting Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) holders within Namwera area Mangochi and 56 of the students made it to various public universities.

The sessions enlightened the students on how to correctly apply to public universities through National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). This was done following an  observation that most of such students do not have enough information  while others are completely unaware of how Public University Selection (PUS) works.

“We as well observed that most students do not have access to internet hence missing their chance of application which is done solely online. We took the students step by step, we provided free internet for them”. Said Saeed Wame, NACC Executive Director.

The session took place at NACC offices while others were done in school around Namwera  including Mama khadija girls private academy, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy and Namwera CDSS.

Following this,  56 students utilized the mentorship and successfully secured places at various universities.

The mentors are NACC staff and a grouping of well wishers who have been through various collidors of Public Universities who come from Namwera area bearing the name Friends of Namwera.

Some of the beneficiary students are now pusuing various programs at University of Malawi, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources Lanar) and Kamuzu University of Healthy Sciences.

“Assisting the students involved other difficult stages especially those with disabilities. One of them is Bamusi, person with disability who is among the successful studentsa who had to be escorted to Mangochi district hospital to solicit medical proof that he had disability. The process was not easy and he was given the proof late. He had to be escorted by us to his home Masuku which is 56 kilometres away due to his albinism which put him at risk of being abducted,” Explained Saeed Wame.

“I am glad to see Bamusi making it to public university despite his disability” Said Billy Molosoni, one of the mentors from Friends of Nmawera.
